Due to hackers and all the data
breaches that occur every so often in today’s age, the Information Technology
field has been turning its focus on how to protect sensitive data. This article
talks about the importance of not only examining the network to check for
intruders but to also keep a record of how, what and where data is being
accessed from. By doing this we can add that extra layer of security keeping
important data safe. The proposed method to approach this idea by the authors
is to develop an IP tracker. An IP address is a series of numbers which contains
the important information about the user on the other side. For example, by
keeping track of the IP address used to access a website, we can trace the
address back and see the route that it took to get there, therefore we will
know the exact starting point, time, and see if the same address is being used
to get to the data. After the IP tracker
captures the IP address of the user, it will store its information in a
database that will hold a certain amount of IP address, and that can be emptied
out by the administrator as pleased. The outcome or impact of this research and
proposed methodology is that companies and organizations can generate
statistics of who access their programs, data, website, etc. In case of a data
breach at least there will be a set amount of locations based on statistical
information of where the most IP traffic comes from and at what time of the day
of the week for instance.
We can already tell how more and
more methods are being proposed in order to protect sensitive data and counterattack
hackers. Without a doubt Information
Security is becoming top priority in the Technology field.

This is actually scary to see, that companies can use your IP addresses just to track your online activities. I think Gmail is using this technology to ensure the account's safety. I once forgot to log off my Gmail account on a public computer, and Gmail provides this feature that you can see your recent activities and sort them by IP addresses. So I was able to log off any session that are not my current used session to ensure that no one is able to use my account on that public computer. This is also very convenient because I didn't have to walk back to the place and log off. So I guess this kind of tracking is both scary but useful, depends on how people want to use it.
ReplyDeleteI've always thought that sort of security process is already implemented when considering the state of cyber security. Keeping track of who comes in and leaves your network should be the basic technique of keeping a secure network. Just by seeing which IP address enters your network, you can see any inconsistencies in the IPs coming into your network over a period of, say, one month. One can probably assume that any IPs that have very low tally count for the month is suspicious and should be investigated. However, on my post, I have mentioned that budget is always an issue and should be resolved for high maintenance processes like this.
